Science Lab

Science facilities
Science facilities: There are 3 Science Laboratories:
  • Biology Lab
  • Chemistry Lab
  • Physics Lab

Adequate laboratory space is provided for each student with sufficient gas, electrical and water outlets. One sink is provided per four students in each lab.

An external gas supply is available.

Shut-off switches are provided for gas and electricity. Safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, fire blankets, fume hoods, emergency showers, eye wash station and first-aid kits are placed in each lab.

Lockable cabinets are available for chemicals or dangerous equipment.

Chemical containers are labeled with the name of the chemical.

Students wear protective aprons and splash-resistant goggles when working with chemicals

Elementary Level:

  • All students at ALS receive multiple opportunities every week to explore science labs that fit the definition described in the Introduction.
  • Laboratory investigations should provide all students with continuous opportunities to explore familiar phenomena and materials. At developmentally appropriate levels, students investigate appropriate questions, analyze the results of laboratory investigations, debate what the evidence means, construct an understanding of science concepts, and apply these concepts to the world around them.
Preparatory and Secondary Levels:

  • All middle level ALS students have multiple opportunities every week to explore science labs as defined in the Introduction. At the secondary level, ALS students in the science lab, collect data every week while exploring science labs.
  • ALS helps all students develop a growing understanding of the complexity and ambiguity of empirical work, as well as the skills to calibrate and troubleshoot equipment used to make observations.
  • As students' progress through secondary level. ALS improve their ability to collaborate effectively with others in carrying out complex tasks, share the work of the task, assume different roles at different times, and contribute and respond to ideas.
